“My technology-free day would be a nightmare,” exclaims one student in the beginning of her final presentation on technology, nature, and her inner encounters of both. This exclamation has amused me a lot which i have repeated it frequently throughout the day when describing this project with other students and colleagues at Saint Francis College, a little college tucked in to the hillsides from the Allegheny mountain tops in central Pennsylvania.
Included in the curriculum within my Ecological Sociology class, students are requested to journal on two different but related types of encounters: two technology-free days and 6 occasions anyway, in solitude without mobile phones or iPods. Their reactions to these kinds of encounters are generally startlingly profound and surprisingly existence altering, however in actuality, existence-enhancing. In the following paragraphs, I’ll relate their encounters with technology-free days.
With this assignment, I’ve given them some instruction, however i have remaining up for them how they would like to define a technology-free “day.” Understanding how addicted the majority of my undergraduate students will be to their mobile phones, laptops with Face book, and iPods, I’m detest to inform them how lengthy they ought to go without such supports. Some students really stretch themselves and define each day being an really day- from sun-up to after dinner. Others are only able to go to date regarding define 1 hour his or her ‘day.’ I keep these things think about the following questions and talk about them within their journals.
So how exactly does it feel to invest each day without technology? What effect is there in your mood? The mind? Your feelings? What variations have you detected from a technology day & a technology-free day? Similarities? What are a few things you want in regards to a technology-free day & why? What have you nothing like and why? How has being technology-free affected your social interactions? Explain. Please describe every other observations.
Within our culture, just about everyone has become determined by communication technology in certain form or any other. And just about everyone has become determined by that technology without being conscious of just how much we depend onto it. For instance, we text buddies, we blog so we ‘Facebook’ (and make up a new verb along the way). With university students, I’m amazed, and secretly touched, because when frequently they call their parents. All students claimed to their parents each day. Others stated they known as their parents, usually their mother, in between each & every class. Some students were not impressed with missing conferences or practices without technology (apparently, their schedule changes every day & this is the way they’re informed).
However, I’m also dismayed because when much computer interaction has replaced face-to-face interaction with college-age students who live right lower the hall from each. They are accountable to me they might IM friends with them, instead of simply walk lower the hall to state hi.
I have tried personally this assignment for countless students over many years in a large number of classes. I’m always astonished by the insightful awareness this straightforward exercise gives them regarding their social interaction as well as their lifestyle. Listed here are a SELECT Couple of of the personal reactions:
Being Present: “Per day without technology, you’re completely focused on your work & what you are with. You’ve got no distractions to consider you from that place. My thoughts was into things i was doing.”
Increasingly social: “This activity helped me more social because to be able to see what time to visit dinner and also the time I needed to increase to individuals and get them rather of texting them or instant message. I additionally notice(d) how beautiful this campus is really.”
“Technology-free days (have) improved my social interactions. I participate in more conversations with my buddies & women within my dorm than simply sitting within the room speaking on instant message and thru texting. Speaking in person with individuals is much more personal than simply delivering IMs and texts.”
